Q3: Is there anything more I need to do to have my application reviewed?

Verify that your documentation is up-to-date (see below).

If your documentation is not up-to-date by November 1 we will not review your application and you will receive a “regrets” notification.

By up-to-date documentation we mean the following. In addition to coursework taken at OSU, we must have records of:

  • All transfer coursework
  • All college credit earned in high school
  • All AP/IB/CLEP test scores
  • Fall enrollment at transfer institutions

Prior to November 1, you should:

  1. Verify that your transcripts are up-to-date.
To verify whether or not your OSU transcript is complete, review your OSU Advance Standing Report and Student Academic Transcript at OSU Online Student Services: http://oregonstate.edu/students/onlineservices/ .

If your transcript is not complete, please upload a copy of your (unofficial) transcripts/test scores through the COE Online Application System.  These documents need to be uploaded in PDF format and must be “screen prints” from an institutional website similar to the OSU online student services website.  Your application will not be reviewed and you will receive a “regrets” notification if coursework, including Fall term, is not available online or in an attached PDF (note – you need not upload your OSU spring term courses).  Please make sure that you also have official copies of transcript data sent to the OSU Admissions office if you do not see it in OSU Online Student Services.

  2. Apply to OSU if you are not a current OSU student.
If you are not yet admitted to OSU, you must apply and be admitted. We will not review your application if you are not admitted to OSU for Winter term by November 1.

Q4: I will be taking fall coursework and I want that considered. What should I do?

By November 1, you must upload a PDF of your Fall term schedule (non-OSU coursework)  into the COE Online Application System if you wish to have your Fall term coursework considered in the professional program application review process. These documents need to be uploaded in PDF format and must be “screen prints” from the institutional website where you will be taking the coursework.  Your advisor will have access to your OSU fall coursework, so an upload is not required..

NOTE:  We will assume a “C” grade in any course that you are completing or repeating fall term when computing your admission “pre-core” GPA.

Your admission decision will be made based solely on documentation in the COE Online Application System, so please make sure it is complete.

Q5: What happens after my file has been reviewed?

The following decisions are possible:

Admit –if you have completed all pre-core coursework, have met other requirements for admission to the professional program, and have an academic record that qualifies you for admission.

Conditional Admit – if you have yet to complete up to 4 credits (or one courses) of pre-core coursework, have met all other requirements for admission to the professional program, and have an academic record that qualifies you for admission provided that you complete the remaining credits of pre-core coursework with “C” or better grades.

Regrets– if you cannot qualify for admission to the professional program based on your academic record, the remaining Fall term coursework that you communicated to your program Head Advisor in the COE Online Application System, or if your documentation is not complete as of November 1.

Q6: When will I be able to register for Winter term pro-school coursework?

If you are fully admitted, you will be able to register for Winter term pro-coursework by January 1.

If you are conditionally admitted, you will be able to register for Winter term pro-coursework about a week after you sign and return a Conditional Admission Agreement that will be emailed to you with your conditional admission decision.  This agreement will need to be signed and electronically returned to: askengineering@oregonstate.edu .

Q7:  I have been conditionally admitted. What does that mean?

If you receive notification that you have been conditionally admitted, you must read, sign and return a Conditional Admission Agreement to the College of Engineering Undergraduate Programs office in BAT 151 indicating that you accept the conditions of Conditional Admission. You may return this form in person, or electronically to: askengineering@oregonstate.edu .

You must agree to complete all, or all but one, of your remaining pre-core requirements by the end of the Fall with “C” or better grades. If you have one pre-core requirement remaining during Winter term, then you must complete (at OSU or elsewhere) that requirement during the first term it is offered at OSU with a “C” or better grade. You must also remain in good academic standing at OSU.

If you do not meet these requirements, then you will be removed from all pro-school coursework and returned to the pre-professional program.

Conditionally admitted students will receive a formal admission letter once all admission conditions have been cleared.

Q8: What does “Capacity Restricted Programs” mean and how does that affect me?

“Capacity Restricted Programs” have more demand than they can meet given available resources.  “Capacity Restricted Programs” have admission pre-core GPA requirements above the minimum 2.25 pre-core GPA.

Please note that capacity restricted programs require that ALL required pre-core coursework be complete by the end of Fall term.  NOTE:  Due to capacity limitations in certain required courses for Civil Engineering (CE) and Construction Engineering Management (CEM) students, CE or CEM students will be allowed to apply for Pro-School admission for Winter, 2012, with one pre-core course remaining after Fall term.

Admission to these programs is determined by rank ordering all applicants by pre-core GPA.  The “capacity restricted admission GPA” is determined based on available resources.   Students with pre-core GPA above the capacity restricted admission GPA may be offered admission or “conditional admission” dependent upon available capacity after the Fall, 2011 admission cycle. The College of Engineering will assume a “C” grade when computing pre-core GPA for any coursework being completed Fall term.

Please note that the information provided below from the most recent admission cycle is for informational purposes only and should not be used as an indicator of the programs that will be capacity constrained in the future or the required GPA for future Pro-School admission.  First-year and sophomore level enrollments have increased significantly in the recent past and this trend will likely result in higher demand in all programs and higher admission GPAs.  If you have questions, please contact your advisor.

Q9: I am not in a “Capacity Restricted Program”.   How does that affect me?

There will be capacity for all qualified students in programs that are not capacity restricted. There may also be capacity for students who identified (or identify) those programs as second choices.

Programs that are not capacity restricted may allow one pre-core course to be remaining for Winter term as long as you have indicated through the COE Online Application System when you will be completing this course. The grade in any pre-core course remaining for Winter term will be presumed to be a "C" grade in the computation of the pre-core GPA.

Q10: What else can I do to improve my chance of admission?

Complete all of your pre-core coursework as early as possible. Students with all pre-core coursework complete will be given priority over those who have an outstanding course at the end of the Fall term.

Since we use the grade following the slash “I/grade” for OSU incompletes, you may wish to complete any incompletes you may have.

Q11: I am a Post-Bac student.  What do I need to do?

As noted for transfer students, please upload in PDF format to the COE Online Application System any coursework that you do not see in Online

Student Services http://oregonstate.edu/students/onlineservices/ Contact your program Head Advisor directly if you have any questions about what may be needed PRIOR to November 1.

Q12: If I am rejected, what should I do?

If you were rejected from a capacity-restricted program you may be eligible to apply to other majors within the College of Engineering.  Contact your program Head Advisor to discuss possible options.

Please note that first choice majors have priority in the admission process.  Please consider a second choice major that is not in a capacity restricted program.

Q13: What is a 1st choice and 2nd choice major?

Your primary major is considered your “1st choice” major.  You also have the option of selecting a “2nd choice” major.  If you are not selected for your 1st choice major you will be considered for your 2nd choice major.. If offered admission you always have the option of declining a 2nd choice major if you change your mind. It is always a good idea to have a backup plan ready if you are in a capacity restricted program.

You may only select a program that is non-capacity restricted for your 2nd choice majors as 1st choice majors have priority and will occupy all available seats in a capacity restricted program
